PERC Sneaks Past Tough Baltimore Side, 28 – 26

On a cold Saturday, PERC made the trip up 95 north to take on local rival Baltimore-Chesapeake. PERC was looking to keep the momentum going with its three game, spring win streak and earn a spot in the postseason.


A quarter of the way into the match, flanker Kevin Kimble broke the line and took the ball in from 30 meters out, outrunning the Baltimore defensive chase. Will converted the kick, 7-0 PERC.  Not to be outdone, the homeside came roaring back with a strong series of offensive control and slow ball. This play soon lead to a series of pick and go’s, which turned into a try. PERC 7 – 5 Baltimore. Minutes later it was PERC on the board again. After a line break, lock Mike Minchik set up Kenny Rothman in a 2 on 1 play. Kenny put the ball down between the posts untouched, and Will converted the kick. PERC 14 – 7 Baltimore. After sustained back and forth play between the sides, it was PERC on the board again. In the last play of the half Jonel chased down a kick, beating Baltimore’s pursuit, and touched the ball down in the try zone.  Conversion good, PERC 21 – 7 Baltimore.


After some back and forth between the 22s early in the second half, it was PERC again with a gorgeous try.  Kimble took the ball broke the Baltimore defensive line, finding space on the sideline. He then offloaded to John Davis, who commited his defender and offloaded to Will in support to finish off the score. Champagne rugby, PERC 28 – 7 Baltimore. Down 3 scores, Baltimore was nowhere near finished. Playing methodical, slow, big ball they scored 3 unanswered tries during the last 20 minutes of play, using pick and go’s to maintain possession and advance the ball inside the 22. PERC 28 – 26 Baltimore.  With 2 minutes left in play, ,Baltimore was only down by two points.


After regaining possession and working down to the PERC goal line, PERC gave up a penalty kick in stoppage, just left of center post. With the game on the line, Baltimore took its shot to win the match. The ball pushed wide right, and PERC survived the day 28 – 26.  


With the 4th win of the spring, PERC has secured the 4th seed of MAC championships.  This upcoming Saturday, PERC will face off against Gorge in Columbia MD.
