Potomac Exiles Secure Win over Nofolk at Home – September 21, 2019

Final Score 29 to 10. PERC win

September 21, Bethesda, MD.  On a scorching day in the summer heat of Maryland, the Potomac Exiles hosted their second MAC league match vs. The Norfolk Blues. The Exiles brought a full and healthy bench, welcoming Nate Tadesse back from injury and joined by new full-back Jacob Powers.

Norfolk kicked off in the sweltering temperatures and a tactical kicking barrage ensued from the Exiles. Some brilliant interplay between the second rows Garvis Garvey and a barreling Brendan Porter’s who served a nice offload to scrum-half Gilroy, slicing through the middle and diving beneath the posts. A successful conversion immediately followed from Kenny. After another fifteen minutes of play, Bill Whalen presented a smooth offload to Joanel Joseph who scampered through from fifteen meters out, shedding defenders and touching the ball down for a perfectly centered try. Norfolk had one more chance to return the favor before the half and marched down the field, the Exiles successfully managed to turn it over. From the wing position, Ballah had several thumping open-field tackles on opposing backs, halting any potential momentum the Blues could have built. Attacking swiftly from our own half, John Davis shipped a perfect pass to Grayson who advanced the ball to the 50 and flicked the ball in contact to Joanel. Joanel expertly put Juice away for a lengthy try to seal the half. Exiles lead 19-0 at the 40-minute mark.

The second wave of Exiles substituted in, bringing on Nate Tadesse, Jacob Powers, Aiden

The second half saw a livelier Blues side, who attacked with more mongrel than they had in the first half. Nate Tadesse made an immediate impact in the Exiles backline and fended the opposing fly-half as he drove in for his maiden try of the season. Norfolk, true to their side, scored from a lineout as their 8 men drove over the line in a cloud of dust. Potomac would go on to score another try late in the second half with Norfolk closing the game out one last score. Final score 29 to 10 in favor or the Potomac Exiles.

Man of the Match was scrumhalf Gilroy for scrappy play and effective boot.

The two sides will face off again in Norfolk on October 12 in Norfolk VA!
